Steven Marley Matthews passed away suddenly on Sunday, May 14, 2023 in Cleburne, Texas. He was born May 2, 1960 also in Cleburne to Burley Marvin and Wanda Almeda Woodard Matthews. He was a dedicated and doting son to both his parents and was honored to care for their needs in any manner he could throughout their lives. Steven believed in honoring his parents not only through effort but also by giving respect in all instances. He graduated with a master’s degree in accounting from TCU (Texas Christian University) and then embarked on his accounting career with Alcon Laboratories in Fort Worth, Texas until retiring. Steven was a man who was humble and private, yet was at the same time, had an independent streak and was strong willed. He was not someone you easily forgot once you spent any amount of time with him. He impacted those around him, forever changing those closest to him for the better. Steven encouraged all who knew him and celebrated others’ accomplishments and victories with a full-heart. His humble nature showed brightest through his ability to share his resources, expertise and wisdom with others without being prideful, when so many others in his shoes, easily would have been. His generosity was un-matched, always making time for those in his circle no matter the need or what he was doing. To say Steven was intelligent does him no justice. His mind was awe-inspiring - from his photographic memory and instant recall to his knowledge of many topics, especially historical events and times. As a child he would often be caught reading and memorizing the set of encyclopedias in his bedroom when he was supposed to be asleep and could recall information as an adult from those bedtime readings even. Steven was mechanically inclined as well and tackled projects in the home or automobiles as easily as he did financial and investing undertakings. Steven spent countless hours on the golf-course or at gatherings and dinners with his friends, all of which brought him great joy, especially if eating Chinese food or Kimberly’s tacos. Football was not only part of his high school experience, but the love of the game sparked him to be an avid Dallas Cowboys fan who could recite the stats of players from the 1960s forward. There are many things one could say about Steven, but all would describe him as a friend – like no other. He will be missed beyond measure.

Steven was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include several extended family members, including his cousins, Wade Woodard and his wife, Katrina, Dana Casey; Aunt Linda Woodard; as well as a vast number of friends throughout the country.
