James Corbet Bushong, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2026, in Keene, Texas. Born on June 5, 1939, in Gainesville, Missouri to Quinton Elmo and Noma May (Pitchford) Bushong. As James’s life was a testament to kindness, diligence, and a steadfast devotion to both his family and his community. He will be deeply missed and affectionately remembered by his family, friends, and all the lives he touched.
Raised in Missouri by his grandparents, James graduated high school in 1957, marking the beginning of an active and accomplished life. He answered the call of duty by serving in the United States Army for three years, an experience that shaped his dedication and discipline. This foundation would become evident throughout his many pursuits and achievements in life.
James spent three decades as a trucker after working for the United States Postal Service (USPS) for 18 years, embracing the open road with the same spirit of adventure and responsibility that defined all he did. His deep love for his local community found powerful expression when he helped establish the Bono Fire Department, serving proudly as its first Fire Chief. His leadership, resilience, and care for others left a lasting mark on countless lives and set a standard that continues to inspire.
Known by all for his happy-go-lucky nature, James was the embodiment of a hardworking, generous soul who loved a good joke and cherished laughter. Friends, family, and strangers alike recall his unflagging kindness and genuine willingness to help everyone he met. He never met a stranger, forming true connections wherever he went. Stories abound of his patience and his ability to bring a smile to those around him, endearing him as a teacher, a mentor, and the highlight of his grandchildren’s lives. He took immense pride in his family and considered them his greatest accomplishment.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Quinton and Noma Bushong; sister, Nina Sue Mack, brothers, Leroy and Corbin Bushong; daughter, Tracy Driskill; grandson, Billy Corbet Bushong; his granddaughter, Eleanor Godfrey; and his grandson, Chance Godfrey.
He is survived by his spouse of 39 years, Lynda Bushong; children, Bernarn Bushong, Michelle Pearce & her husband, Doug, Steven Bushong, Diane Godfrey, Larry Wes Driskill, Michelle Baker & husband, Dennis, and Melody Kay Duvall & husband, Parker; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; brother, Michael Bushong, and the mother of his children, Louise Bushong.
