Obituary

James R. “Jim” Elder, age 87, passed from this life July 4, 2020.

Jim was born in Altus, Oklahoma to Forrest Hugh “Hoke” and Marie Watterson Elder. He was a master auto mechanic for many years in Altus, Oklahoma before moving to the Fort Worth area in 1967 to work for the General Services Administration Fleet Management of the United States Federal Government. He worked on many special projects for the GSA and was very proud of his work on Apollo 11 and 12 while serving NASA at Johnson Space Center in Houston. He retired from the GSA in 1994. In addition to his years in Altus, Oklahoma, he lived in many towns in north Texas -- Haltom City, North Richland Hills, Burleson, Grandview and Cleburne. His time in Grandview was especially dear to him and he enjoyed working on his little farm and in his shop.

He was a member of the Granbury Street Church of Christ. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served in the Army Reserve and the Oklahoma National Guard. He was a past Post Commander of the American Legion Post 44 in Altus, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his father, his mother and sisters JoAnn Elder and Ella Hinson.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Carol; daughter Valerie Neill and husband Dennis of Cleburne; granddaughter Rachel Harvill and husband Louis of Plano; grandson Weston Sherrill and wife Rachel of Maypearl; great-grandsons Wyatt Clay Sherrill and Louis Marion Harvill, V., “Quin” and great-grandaughter Hudson Grace.

Jim enjoyed working on and showing his antique 1949 Chevrolet Pickup with his grandson Weston. He loved restoring old trucks and tractors and collecting pocket watches. He had many professions as a mechanic, certified locksmith, and was a private pilot.

Above all, he loved his family and taking care of them. He could fix anything except a broken heart. He was always willing to lend a hand to someone in need. He will be remembered for his love and kindness.

A memorial service is scheduled at Grandview Church of Christ at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2020.
